The Black Elk was a subspecies of elk associated with the Marcher Lands of Hachiman.

Description

This was a huge animal. Its antlers were up to fifteen feet long, seemingly made of ebony, and its eyes are said to be jewels of flame. The antler has magical properties, due perhaps to its strange whorled pattern, like a serpent. In fact, if struck correctly it will turn into a serpent staff.

Their pelts were valuable, though they would defend themselves with their antlers and hooves.

Origins and Distribution

At the time of the events described in Sword of the Samurai, this animal had not been seen in seventy years.
