The guards of the North Gate of Kharé describe Crolian as their "own native tongue".

They further assume that anyone who speaks Crolian is from Mauristatia. Crolia is a principality in that mountainous land.[1] Since the guards assume that someone who speaks Crolian comes from "Mauristatia", and not "Crolia", it appears the Crolian language is widely spoken in Mauristatia.

It is interesting to note that the authorities of Kharé employ the services of guardsmen from other parts of the Old World for the protection of their city.

According to one source, their name derives from the legendary war leader Crol, that led many tribes from the south of the Old World and settled in the eastern area of what is now Mauristatia. There, most of the Crolians progressively abandoned nomadism, but just a few of them stayed true to their ancient customs, maintaining all other clans connected with their seasonal movements.[2] The phenomenon of Crolian emigration was initiated by Saint Wiligelmus's crusade.[3]
