Dree was one of the vilest settlements in the whole of Allansia, if not all Titan.
Description[]
Dree was reached by a rickety wooden bridge over the Deedlewater. The village's houses were all coloured black, and the air and streets are thick with dust. Most of the inhabitants are Hags and Witches; numerous miserable mutant creatures also dwell here.[1] There was a street market in Dree where performers entertain the villagers.[1]
History[]
A wretched village on the banks of the Deedlewater, it was founded by the infamous practitioner of the mutating magic of Marrangha, Romeena. When exiled from her native city of Salamonis, Romeena and her followers built the village. As a result of the Witches' activities, Dree is feared by most Allansians; "not even the most courageous Strongarm will stay near Dree, home of the witch-women."[2] Dree became infamous for the number of unscrupulous traders who simply vanished after visiting it, hoping to acquire things such as potions and curses. These ended up being welcomed, but later drugged, captured and mutated as part of the endlessly-unsuccessful Marrangha experiments. The pitiful, horribly deformed results of these experiments eke out an existence (if one can call it that) on Dree's filthy streets, or are kept by the witches as slaves or for their own amusement.[1][3] The few outsiders who sailed the Deedlewater and saw these warped, miserable creatures were horrified.[2]
However, eventually a trader was able to successfully bargain with the witches; one Ganga of Mirewater. Ganga deliberately carried things that the hag-witches needed for their spells, and could not obtain from other sources. Ganga sold them items such as Medusa Grass, Curseleaf, Mungie brains, Elf livers, pickled Lizard tongues and so on.[2]
Traders are now slightly more common in Dree.[4]
Some of the most well-known inhabitants of Dree were the Women of Dree, the three prescient witches with a greater affinity for Chance than Evil; Rosina of Dree, witch and seer with considerable magical powers; Vitriana, a herbalist who lives in the Forest of Yore; the Sisters of Sheena, who became cooks in Balthus Dire's Black Tower; and, above and beyond all inhabitants of Dree combined, Zharradan Marr.[5]
