Edward Crosby is an illustrator and graphic artist whose contribution to Fighting Fantasy is known from his work on the Caverns of the Snow Witch.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Crosby studied Art and Graphic Design at Goldsmith’s College, London, graduating in 1984, with a "London diploma of art and design LDAD" before becoming a freelance illustrator.

Career[]

Fighting Fantasy[]

His first big commission was with his friend and fellow Goldsmith’s student Gary Ward who were given the job of illustrating the ninth Fighting Fantasy gamebook Caverns of the Snow Witch by Ian Livingstone. The adventure had previously appeared in Warlock issue 2, although it had been illustrated by a different artist. Altogether they were asked to produce about 25 illustrations for the book. According to Crosby they went for a bold wood block-style, using black felt tip and the originals were drawn on A3 paper.[1] Despite a positive reaction to the work, neither Crosby nor Ward worked on Fighting Fantasy again, save in republishing of the artwork in books such as Titan - The Fighting Fantasy World, Out of the Pit and The Fighting Fantasy 10th Anniversary Yearbook.

Outside of Fighting Fantasy[]

Crosby moved to Australia and in 1996 he won a UNESCO picture book illustration medal. Crosby actively continued his education alongside his career progression as well. In 1999 he was an assistant teacher at the Box Hill Institute of TAFE where, in the same year, he received an "Associate Diploma in Art (Graphic Art)". From there he joined S-Central Internet Services as an Interactive Designer, turning his attention more towards electronic means of production of art as the graphic design industry increasingly orientated itself in that direction. During the first year there he also took the "Advanced Diploma in Electronic Design and Interactive Media" at his familiar Box Hill Institute of TAFE.

In 2001 he left S-Central and concentrated on a degree at the prestigious RMIT University from which in 2003 he received a "Bachelor of Arts" degree in Multimedia. This proved to be the spring board from which he launched his own company, Edward Crosby Design, for which he still currently works as a full-time, freelance designer for print and interactive media.[2]
