Elif Montaigne is a pregenerated character whom the player can assume in The Citadel of Chaos.[1]

Elif was born in the mountains of Titan to a community of nomads who have lived on the steep desolate mountain slopes for many years.[1]

She is small and "wispy looking", but still capable of incredible physical strength and fierce endurance, and is said to have a beauty that is as great the flowers that grow on her homeland's mountainside.[1]

Elif studied under the Grand Wizard of Yore, and is said to command his respect, despite often being caught daydreaming during the Grand Wizard's lectures.[1] She is regarded as by far the most gifted young sorceress in Allansia, capable of casting spells of fierce beauty and power.[1]

She may even have been the Grand Wizard's star pupil, the Hero of The Citadel of Chaos who went to the Black Tower to assassinate Balthus Dire to protect the Vale of Willow from invasion.[2]

Further Notes[]

  • All pregenerated characters from The Citadel of Chaos (including Elif Montaigne) are said to have 6 Provisions, despite the book having no rules for Provisions, and stating that the Stamina spell is the only way to restore lost stamina points.[1][3]
  • Despite having only 13 magic points, Elif has 14 spells. Unusually, unlike the other characters which have the spells listed in order of the number of copies of each spell they have, Elif has Fire listed first, despite only having 2 copies of the spell, while having 4 copies of Shielding, and 3 copies of Strength.[1]
  • Of the three pregenerated characters from The Citadel of Chaos, Elif has the best odds of completing the book. Her ability to use Illusion lets her get out of the dungeon after finding the door combination code, which lets her get the magic battlesword and silver mirror; having the Strength spell and a high enough skill allows her to defeat the Clawbeast; finally having Fire and a second Illusion spell allows her to defeat Balthus Dire by completing just one luck test, and she even has a Levitation spell to escape at the very end.
  • It is possible the Nomad tribe Elif belonged to were either Flatlands Nomads or Nomads of Desert of Skulls, since they are the nearest nomad communities to the Forest of Yore area.
