Elsevier Gringlewald is a pregenerated character whom the player can assume in The Citadel of Chaos.[1]
Elsevier had a difficult childhood, with his unpleasant step-father throwing him out of home when he was a boy.[1]
He took on various professions, becoming a conman, a thief, a salesman and at one point a circus illusionist, but managed to avoid serious trouble during this time due to his good fortune and natural charm.[1]
All of this changed when he found magic, his true vocation. He gave up his previous careers, and began training to become a wizard.[1] He became a brilliant spellcaster, and master of the subtler arts of magic, including illusions, trickery and perception, drawing on his past experiences and weaving them into his spells.[1]
He may have studied under the Grand Wizard of Yore, possibly as the Grand Wizard's star pupil, the Hero of The Citadel of Chaos who went to the Black Tower to assassinate Balthus Dire to protect the Vale of Willow from invasion.[2]
Further Notes[]
- The name Gringlewald may be a reference to Gellert Grindelwald, a dark wizard in the Harry Potter series.
- All pregenerated characters from The Citadel of Chaos (including Elsevier Gringlewald) are said to have 6 Provisions, despite the book having no rules for Provisions, and stating that the Stamina spell is the only way to restore lost stamina points.[1][3]
- Due to his selection of spells, Elsevier does not have a very easy way to complete The Citadel of Chaos. His lack of the Weakness and Strength spells combined with his low skill (and no way to heal the lost skill from the Ganjees) makes his fight against the Clawbeast difficult. His high initial luck and ability to restore it with the Luck spell means that his best chance is to use luck to do as much damage as possible to the Clawbeast in the first four hits (using the magic battlesword with the Enchanted Throwing Dagger as a backup). Because of this, of the three pregenerated characters from The Citadel of Chaos, Elsevier has better odds of completing the book than Tybalt Spellcaster, but worse odds than Elif Montaigne.
