Harpies were a race of sadistic, bat-winged humanoids with sharp talons and bulging eyes.[1]
Description[]
A harpy did not actually possess any arms,[2] but its legs terminated in prehensile claws capable of gripping, rending and tearing. These claws were a harpy's natural weapons and were often put to good use, as harpies were predatory creatures and, moreover, vicious. These creatures delighted in tormenting vulnerable travellers.[1]
Harpies were, however, rather weak, and possessed little intelligence. As such they were usually outmatched by a skilled warrior. Nevertheless, they could remain difficult to fight due to their ability to fly. Indeed, capable of flying to great heights, harpies could make their habitat in inaccessible places among the hills and mountains of Titan and, while physically weak, would often have the element of surprise on their side, if not for their attacks usually being announced by strident cawing and screeching.[1]
Further Notes[]
- Harpies are ultimately derived from Greek mythology. There is an encounter in Kharé - Cityport of Traps series in which two Harpies torment the blind Seventh Noble of Kharé.[3] Given that a number of characters in the Sorcery! series have their inspiration in the film Jason and the Argonauts, it is likely that this scene was inspired by the harpies which torment the blind Phineas.
