Spoiler Warning!!!: Plot and/or ending details of a Fighting Fantasy publication follow. Please DO NOT read this article if you do not want foreknowledge of this publication. Although the article below is based on canon, some of its content is considered extrapolation because it assumes a certain course of events through an adventure that has many possible routes. Finally, the use of "Hero" and other male- gender expressions pertaining to the subject in the article and/or title of the article is not intended to exclude the possibility that the hero was female.
The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon was a warrior who had been considering entering for five years, not for the rewards, but because the challenge had never before been completed. When the hero decided to enter, he or she was two days' east of Port Blacksand, a city with which he or she was familiar. After triumphing, the hero received 10,000 Gold Pieces and the freedom of the province of Chiang Mai.[1]
It is possible that the hero featured in other books, either before or afterwards. The three Pre-generated Player Characters are the same as those in Trial of Champions and Armies of Death, indicating that the heroes of all three may have been the same person. However, as there are three characters, it is also possible that each book was completed by a different one or two books by one and one by another. Alternatively, these characters may have died whilst attempting one of these books and the hero may be someone else entirely.
Hakasan Za, a companion character for the bulk of The Port of Peril, indicated interest in this challenge, and could be inferred to be the hero.[2] However, the hero's decision to enter the labyrinth took place some distance to the west of Hakasan Za's last recorded location at Yaztromo's Tower.
Further Notes[]
The MyriadorD20 System adaption of Trial of Champions states that Chadda Darkmane was the first person to successful complete the Deathtrap Dungeon.[3] This would mean Darkmane was the protagonist of Deathtrap Dungeon. This claim that Darkmane successfully passed through Deathtrap Dungeon is not made in any other Fighting Fantasy publications.
