The Hero of Master of Chaos was a seasoned and accomplished adventurer,[1] recruited by a conclave of wizards in Analand to retrieve the Staff of Rulership, stolen by Shanzikuul. Only the hero was believed to stand a chance of completing the mission, due to his or her reputation, including previous dealings with giants and a fire-breathing Great Wyrm.[2]
The hero travelled incognito to Shanzikuul's stronghold in Kabesh and defeated him, along with others seeking the Staff, including the powerful Dark Elven hero, Naas.[3] The hero returned with the Staff to the Old World using an Amulet of Teleportation, and received a number of rewards from the grateful wizards of Analand, including gold and gems, magical weapons, a platter which provides food magically, magical Elven chainmail and an intelligent Warhorse.[4]
The hero might also have acquired some of the following magical items: the Moon Sword,[5] Shanzikuul's ring,[6] a Luck Ring,[7] a Ring of Endurance,[8] Boots of Stealth,[9] the Sacred Sphere of Hazdur[10] and The Three Hundred and Thirty Incantations of Ssassuzlit.[11]
It is possible for the hero to have taken part in other books either before or afterwards, although the plethora of magic items provided at the end might make future adventures trivial. The hero began the quest unarmed in order to maintain secrecy as to his or her identity, but a shield was listed as standard equipment.[12] The hero of Stealer of Souls also carried a shield.
