Although the article below is based on canon, some of its content is considered extrapolation because it assumes a certain course of events through an adventure that has many possible routes. Finally, the use of "Hero" and other male- gender expressions pertaining to the subject in the article and/or title of the article is not intended to exclude the possibility that the hero was female.

"Spoiler!" Beware!

The Hero of The Port of Peril was "a seasoned adventurer, an experienced sword-for-hire who enjoy[ed] slaying monsters and finding treasure above anything else." He or she arrived in Chalice tired and hungry after spending a month searching the Pagan Plains in vain for the buried treasure of a notorious axe-wielding barbarian called Throm, who was rumoured to have died in Deathtrap Dungeon (not necessarily the same one who features in the book of the same name). Unable to find work,[1] the hero eventually acquired a treasure map and followed it to Skull Crag.[2]

Unfortunately, there was no treasure, but when leaving, the hero met Hakasan Za[3] and agreed to travel with her. They soon met the mortally-wounded Horace Wolff who informed them that Zanbar Bone had returned.[4] The two adventurers visited Yaztromo[5] and the hero then rescued Nicodemus from imprisonment by Lord Azzur,[6] recovering the Ring of Burning Snakes on the way.[7]

When they arrived at Yaztromo's Tower, the wizard and warrior found it besieged by the Night Prince's skeleton army, but with Yaztromo and Hakasan's help, the hero was able to shatter Zanbar Bone's skull with either a shot from a flintlock pistol or a Demon Dagger, temporarily incapacitating him and causing the undead army to disintegrate.[8]

Yaztromo decided that permanently defeating Zanbar Bone could wait for another day and Hakasan expressed the intention of entering the Trial of Champions. As she claimed the prize to be 10,000 Gold Pieces,[9] this must have occurred before Deathtrap Dungeon, unless she was mistaken or Baron Sukumvit reduced the prize when the dungeon was defeated for a second time in Trial of Champions.

It is possible that the hero took part in other books, either before or afterwards. He or she may have obtained a Dwarf warrior shield made of bronze,[10] a pair of elven boots,[11] a bronze-studded winged steel helmet which once belonged to a Wood Elf noble,[12] a finely crafted chain-mail coat,[13] a blade, called the Venom Sword by Travis Traynor, the travelling trader, or items that pedlar described as the Orb of Obedience and the Horn of Calling.[14] The hero definitely found a pair of Chaos Warrior's gauntlets[15] and a Dragonfly Pendant.[16]
