Hovers are artificial wings used by senior Pangarian Sky Watch officers to fly.[1]
Technology[]
Hovers are a product of Goblin technomancy, a blend of elemental magic and engineering.[1] They are powered by storm crystals which are harvested and gathered from the tempest Zephyrus by the Stormborn.[1] They are intricate and extremely light despite having metalwork parts.[1]
Use[]
Hovers can be controlled by a humanoid using their shoulder muscles to operate and steer in flight.[1] As well as flying, they can be used when in free fall to slow decent or stay still in mid-air.[2] When started up the wings unfurl with "a soft thwack, thwack, thack sound", and they fold up when not in use, or when the hovers run out of energy.[2][3]
Hovers have a crystal gauge attached to the storm crystal power source to indicate how full their charge is.[1] When the crystal starts to run out of charge, the hovers emit a humming sound and the wings start to shudder.[2] One third of a charged crystal is enough to travel from Nimbus to one of the outer islands, while a fully charged crystal just allows the wearer to fly from one of the outer islands to another.[1][2][3]
Sky Watch[]
The Sky Watch use hovers to travel freely between the islands without having to rely on flyers, and they are stored in the island Watchhouses.[1] They are also an indicator of rank among Sky Watch officers, who recieve their own pair when they reach a certain level of seniority.[1] For example, when the entire Sky Watch was called to the Citadel, Captain Halleck said that he "can't be seen in the Citadel without those".[1]
