The creature was legendary[3] and their actual existence was regarded with scepticism by some, who largely saw it as the figment of a mariner's over-active imagination. Yet, in the deepest places of Titan's waters Krakens were a vast, monstrous reality. It was a predatory animal, and its appetite would be large enough to service its massive body. The creature would ensnare its prey with one or more of its tentacles, pulling or dragging the morsel towards its beak.[4] Description[]Krakens in Titan were neither giant octopi nor giant squids, but displayed enough of their characteristics to be some gargantuan relative of them. A Squid had ten limbs, an Octopus eight, however the number a Kraken possesses could vary. On the shores of Lake Nekros a Kraken with at least five tentacles was encountered,[5] while in the area of ocean just off the Skull Coast near Port Blacksand, a nine-tentacled Kraken was found.[6] A kraken could have up to ten tentacles. The predations of a Kraken were not confined to its aquatic environment - the creatures are large enough to sometimes reach its tentacles across the shores, waylaying and devouring any morsels it is attracted to.[7] They do, however, have a vulnerability to, and a fear of, fire,[8] an element that must be totally alien to the creature. Young krakens were known as mottled krakens for their patchy appearance, and lived in far darker areas until their adulthood. One such young kraken served as a foul minion of Xakhaz, where it resided in the filthy water of the caverns underneath Neuberg Keep.[9] There was also a Kraken known to be living in the lakes of the Spider Fens.[10] History[]![]() A kraken assaulting a pirate ship.
