Medusas were a species of humanoids that resembled women dressed in ragged clothes, but in a place of a crown of hair is a writhing mass of snakes.[1]

Description[]

Should anyone gaze into a medusas sickly red eyes they would become petrified into stone within seconds.[2][1]

In order to avoid the deadly gaze of a medusa an opponent needed to cover their eyes in time and avoid an untimely end. Fighting a medusa with eyes firmly shut is quite tricky as an opponent must wave their weapon from side to side in the hope of inflicting damage.[3]

Given that petrifying their victims seemed to be of no benefit to medusas, it could be argued that they were simply malicious.[1]

Medusas typically dwelt in solitary areas, such as caves or ruins. They were also vulnerable to their own reflection, and as such had to avoid gazing into mirrors, lest they turned to stone and crumbled to dust within moments.[1]

Further Notes[]

  • Medusa was one of the Gorgons in Greek mythology.
  • Despite being described as resembling old women in Out of the Pit, medusas often appear young in their appearances in gamebooks.
