The Moonstone Hills is a vast range of hills in northern Allansia, home to many peoples.
Geography[]
The Hills are filled with high bluffs and narrow valleys, and are prone to misty weather.[1] In the northern lowlands of the Hills lies Firetop Mountain.[2] The Moonstone Hills lie east of Darkwood Forest.[3] The south-west of the Hills contain the Forest of Spiders, Deedlewater, and the villages of Coven, Dree, and Stittle Woad.[4] The peak of Skull Crag is located in the Hills.[5] The southern edge borders the Trolltooth Pass.[1] The Red River and Catfish River both rise in the Hills; the red soil in the Hills gives the Red River its distinctive coloration.[1][3][6] A number of roads run through the hills, allowing travel from the area near Darkwood forest to the Flatlands on the other side.[1]
Inhabitants[]
Many dangerous creatures dwell in the Moonstone Hills, including orcs (from the Clawed Eye tribe of Urgari Grinning Teeth), goblins, wild elves, cave trolls (especially around Skull Crag) and adult red dragons.[7][8][9] Despite the dangers of the Hills, adventurous humans often come to the region. These include wizards and herbalists, seeking out the rare seedlings in the area,[10][11] and prospectors, drawn by the gold deposits in the Moonstone Hills' many streams.[12] Tribes of Northern Barbarian Humans (also known as Hill Barbarians) make their homes in the Hills.[13]
There was formerly a Dwarf settlement in the Moonstone Hills called Haellsgarth, which was later captured by the Dread Lord Axion, who turned it into his capital.[14] The Dwarf Mine of Grey Rock is located in the Hills.[15] The Tornhelim Clan of Dwarves have a settlement in the Hills, with gold mines in it .[16]
There is a small village called Breakbone in the Hills; it is inhabited by both Humans and Black Elves, and it has been involved in the wars between Balthus Dire and Zharradan Marr, switching political allegiance depending on which troops occupy Breakbone.[17] There is also a "very, very old temple" near the village, which is largely shunned as it was once used by the acolytes of the God of Death.[17]
Notable Individuals[]
- According to some sources, Pen Ty Kora, the Healer, lives in a cave in the Moonstone Hills with a phoenix painted on the outside.[18][19]
- Zharradan Marr was raised in the Moonstone Hills as a child.[20]
- Razaak the Necromancer had his lair in the Hills.[21]
- Grimbold Tornhelm, son of Hakkim, is a dwarf adventurer who formerly lived in the Tornhelim settlement as a child. [16]
- The human rogue Weasel grew up in the Hills.[22]
Use of the Definite Article in (The) Moonstone Hills[]
In some canon sources, particularly those by Ian Livingstone, these hills are referred to simply as "Moonstone Hills" rather than "the Moonstone Hills".
