Nylock was a merchant who owned a shop inside Mampang Fortress.[1]
Description[]
Like the First Assistant to the Lord Treasurer, Valignya, he wore a large turban and fine robes. He was plump with yellow skin. Although he welcomed all customers, even to the point of leaving the door to his room open, he was suspicious of strangers and would watch anyone in his shop intently to prevent them secretly stealing his products. [2]
Should anyone try to snatch an item from his shop, Nylock would make a sharp clicking sound with his teeth. This would trigger iron spikes to bar the exit and probably also cause the thief to drop the item. He might then summon guards.[3]
Although keen to avoid visitors cheating him, Nylock was not entirely honest either. He had no scruples in lying to customers to get rid of junk items. [4]
Products[]
Nylock has a variety of items in his shop, along with two portraits. He had some products that may have interested the Analander:
- Rusty Cutlass (3GP)
- Candles (2GP)
- Spell Artefacts (5GP each, see below)
- Nest with Egg (2GP)
- Silver Pieces (without the pouch, see below) (4GP)
Nylock claimed that the rusty cutlass was enchanted but it was simply a worthless lump of metal he was eager to remove. [5] The Candles were self-lighting and included a wax candle and a firefox blood candle.[6] The Nest contained a golden Egg that may have been of significance to birdmen.[7]
The spell artefacts included a jewel of gold, yellow powder, a gold-backed mirror, an orb of crystal, and a jewel-studded medallion. Nylock offered to sell 2 artefacts for 8GP, 3 for 10GP, and any additional artefacts for just 1GP.[8]
The ancient Silver Pieces were kept in a pouch, but Nylock was only willing to sell the pieces. The pouch could generate more coins, so Nylock had lost nothing. Whilst the pieces were worth more than 4GP, they were capable of burning a hole through any container other than the pouch, including the customer's backpack.[9]
Further Notes[]
- The two portraits in Nylock's shop are cameos of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.
