A Poltergeist was an Undead type of monster in the Fighting Fantasy franchise.

Descriptions[]

Poltergeists are invisible and appear to have to physical form to speak of. However, on certain occasions a Poltergeist can project an indirect projection of its former self onto a nearby reflective surface, such as a mirror.[1] However, this is more like a flashback or haunting manifestation which does not allow its victims to perceive a Poltergeist's current form.

Origins and Distribution[]

A Poltergeist is essentially an invisible spirit, the remains of a restless soul trapped on the Earthly Plane. In their restlessness they attack anyone entering their domain until the intruders are dead or driven away, or if the Poltergeist himself is destroyed.

Special Abilities[]

Poltergeists are able to physically move objects and thus attack their victims by either throwing things at them or wielding a weapon, inflicting Damage according to the type of weapon used. However, as incorporeal spirits Poltergeists cannot be harmed by physical weapons; only certain Priest Spells (in Advanced Fighting Fantasy, the Priest spell Banish Spirit) or special artifacts (such as Holy Oil) can be used for that task.[2]

The only other method to safely get rid of a Poltergeist is to find the cause of its restlessness and get rid of it, allowing its spirit to finally rest in peace.[3]

Further Notes[]

  • The word Poltergeist comes from German and means "rumbling ghost."
