Rokuro-Kubi were undead with detachable heads. Some lived in the realm of Hachiman.[1]

Description[]

During daytime, Rokuro-Kubi acted in the manner of normal Humans and had jobs, political allegiances, and superstitions just like anyone else.[2] However, clues to their true nature included a gnashing of teeth and discussions such as not planting crops at all.[3] In this state, Rokuro-Kubi would perhaps attempt to warn travellers away from their settlements, suggesting they had a Human conscience at least [4] During the hours of darkness, Rokuro-Kubi revealed their true nature and hunt in packs. Their heads were capable of free flight.[5]

They could expel black gobbets of material from their mouths in combat.

Origins and Distribution[]

A group of Rokuro-Kubi in Hachiman lived in the Village of the Undead [6] It is not known how they came into origin, but most lived normal lives except at night, with some working as charcoal burners [7].

Further Notes[]

  • In Japanese, kubi means "neck" and rokuro either a "lathe" or "potter's wheel", a nod to the spinning heads of these undead. However, these monsters are actually called Nukekubi in Japan.
