Slime Suckers were a type of disgusting and dangerous beasts that dwelt in the stinking, black, slime-filled waters at the heart of swamps.[1]

Description[]

Slime suckers resembled creatures out of a nightmare. Six octopus-like legs supported a shapeless body, which merged into a head with huge, evil eyes and a cavernous, tooth-filled mouth. From the top of its head sprouted a pair of breathing-tubes that allow it to lurk beneath the surface of the mud, awaiting prey.

Dark green, foul-smelling slime covered its body, and it would gurgle disgustingly in anticipation of a meal.[1] Their skin and flesh were also dark green in colour, and soft and lumpy in texture.[2]

Slime suckers had little trouble negotiating the treacherous swamps, shifting its weight from one tentacle-like leg to another while lashing out at its prey with two more. Once it has caught and killed its prey, it would drag it beneath the stinking waters, to nibble it slowly to the bone, gorging on the succulent meat.[1] One authority had it that slime suckers preferred cold meat.[3]

Marsh hoppers would sometimes lead unfortunate adventurers to the lair of a slime sucker in return for a few left-over scraps of meat.[4]

Origins and Distribution[]

A Slime Sucker from Fire Island

Initially recorded from the black-water marshlands of Fire Island[5], several large slime sucker had also been found in both Marsh Vile[6] and the nameless bogs of Affen Forest[3] in north-western Khul. They may also be found in the Deathmoor, in the presence of Tendril Grass.[7]

This wide-spread distribution, together with their presence in Allansia in some marshes, suggested to some that they were most likely found in such habitats across Titan.[8] This pointed to an Irritarian origin for the slime suckers, which was likely given their hybrid appearance. Although described as octopus-like, their two fore-tentacles ended in diamond-shaped paddles that resembled those of a giant squid. Also, whilst their large eyes and breathing tubes could be construed as mollusc-like, their tooth-filled mouth and three nostrils clearly point to other factors in their make-up.

Further Notes[]

  • Slime Suckers appear as one of the 100 creatures in the "Out of the Pit"" bestiary in issue 2 of Warlock. Bizarrely, they are given 2 Attacks here,[9] but only 1 in Out of the Pit.[1]
