Sukumvit Charavask is the Baron of Fang and ruler of the province of Chiang Mai.[1] Sukumvit is famed for his Deathtrap Dungeon,[2] to the extent that he is known to those who live in north-west Khul.[3]
History[]
Sukumvit was born on Seaday 21st of Watching, 234 AC. He was the son of Baron Arkat Charavask of Fang, one of the wealthiest rulers in Allansia.[4] Sukumvit has a younger brother, Carnuss Charavask.[4] Carnuss was jealous of Sukumvit, and after the latter was crowned Baron, tried to hire assassins to kill Sukumvit. However, the "assassins" turned out to be Sukumvit's palace guards, who exposed his plot. Humiliated, Carnuss absconded with his wealth and fled Chiang Mai.[4]
Sukumvit always had a sadistic streak, and he decided to create a challenge for adventurers. He created a lethally dangerous dungeon, and offered a lavish reward for anyone who could beat it.[2][5] Sukumvit opened Deathtrap Dungeon on his 40th birthday, in 274 AC.[6] To obtain monsters to populate Deathtrap Dungeon, Sukumvit made deals with merchants across Allansia; one of these merchants was Ignatius Galapagos of Kallamehr.[7]
Eventually, an adventurer did successfully complete the Deathtrap Dungeon and claim Sukumvit's reward.[8] Sukumvit was furious at this loss of face. He hired a Gumar Hunter to assassinate the adventurer, retrieve Sukumvit's treasure, and "stifle the news of his humiliating defeat".[9] However, the Gumar Hunter failed in his mission.
After the failure of the first Deathtrap Dungeon, Sukumvit re-designed the contest to make it even more lethal. A few months later, Sukumvit sent messengers across Allansia to inform the public that he had created the new "Trial of Champions" in the Dungeon. Sukumvit added that this time no one would ever get out of it alive.[4]
Personality and Traits[]
Sukumvit typically wore plain but high quality clothing, though he was expected to don his robes of state and silver dragon skull topped helm for official occasions.[10] He was also well-known for his colourful bamboo umbrellas.[11]
Sukumvit was a friend of Varek Azzur, the ruler of Port Blacksand. At the same time Sukumvit was preparing another Trial of Champions, Azzur had placed a bounty on an adventurer who had killed the Night Prince Zanbar Bone. It is possible that this adventurer managed to survive all the assassins pursuing the bounty and reached Fang. If this happened, then it is possible that the adventurer was forced by Azzur and Sukumvit into entering Deathtrap Dungeon in exchange for pardon. [12]
According to the Myriador D20 System adaption of Deathtrap Dungeon, Sukumvit had a son, the 16-year old Prince Aronkhon Charavask. Aronkhon resented his father and eagerly awaited the day when he would succeed Sukumvit as Baron of Fang. [13]
