The Tatsu were a race of wingless dragons who can travel on sea, sky or land.
Description[]
A Tatsu had a lizard-like head covered in horns, and a body covered in shining scales which were golden, silver, red and green in colour. There were two types of Tatsu, the Lesser Tatsu and the rarer, more powerful Greater Tatsu.[1] The Tatsu described themselves as being "bound by celestial laws". [2] A Tatsu could fly despite lacking any wings.
If encountering a traveller going through its domain, the Tatsu would challenge the traveller to a riddle contest or a game of chance. If the traveller won the contest, the Tatsu would allow the traveller safe passage through the area. But if the traveller lost the contest, the Tatsu would attack them in a fight to the death.[1] [2]
A Tatsu gained its magical powers from a sorcerous pearl embedded deep within their skull. Amazing powers were said to be granted to someone who could kill a Tatsu and ingest such a pearl. Such pearls were very, very rare, and only possessed by the most powerful wizards and emperors.[1]
Jade charms sculpted in the form of a Tatsu also existed. These were known as the Talismans of Fortuitous Circumstances, and gave an increase in fortune to anyone who wore one. These talismans were sometimes given to those who assist a Tatsu. The Tatsu detested the Sturramak, and would gift a Talisman of Fortuitous Circumstances to anyone they met that had killed a Sturramak.[1]
Origins and Distribution[]
Tatsu were rare creatures usually found in Hachiman, in remote parts of the Forest of Shadows, or the highest peaks of the Shios'ii Mountains.[1] Some Tatsu had been located in the wastes near the city-state of Zamarra in Southwest Khul, and in the mountains called the Anvils of the Gods in the distant south of the Old World. [1]
Special Abilities[]
A Tatsu can breathe fire onto its foes. A sucessful target couuld suffer no damage, but if unsuccessful, the target could suffer greatly, especially if the fire was breathed by a Greater Tatsu. Some Tatsu could also use magic, conjuring up illusory soldiers to protect their lairs, or creating thunderstorms to attack their enemies with winds and lightning.[1]
Notable Tatsu[]
- One tatsu was thought to be a god or demi-god associated with Kilanirax. His abode was the Pinnacle of Ultimate Height.[1][2]
