Background[]

Call me Yshmaal! I've been sailing the seas of Titan longer than I care to remember. I've sailed the sea of blood, battled the demons of the deep, and survived an island of the undead. But the time I wish to tell you about is far worse than any of those. It concerns the time I joined the ill-fated hunt of the Black Whale...

Fighting Fantazine Issue 9 - pg.76

The heroes are invited to assist Captain Akab on his quest to slay the infamous Black Whale, a giant Bullwhale that is terrorising the Eelsea. Akab states that the Black Whale recently sunk the Royal Treasure Galleon of Femphrey, the Jewel of Mhynnh, and adds that the Black Whale is reported to have swallowed the Galleon's cargo of precious stones; he offeres the players a share of the reward if they will help him.[1]

Rules[]

The adventure in general follows the original rules set down in Advanced Fighting Fantasy – The Roleplaying Game.

Illustrations[]

The interior illustrations are by Michael Wolmarans. There is one big illustration and one small (repeated) illustration. There are also deck plans of the good ship Questrel.

Intertextual Relations[]

Of course this adventure is inspired by Moby Dick by Herman Melville. "Call me Ishmael." is one of world literature's most famous opening sentences and is clearly recalled in the opening of this adventure.

In the adventure introduction mentioned above, there are clear references to Seas of Blood, Demons of the Deep and Island of the Undead. Other adventures explicitly mentioned in the "Starting Play" session are Stormslayer and The Crown of Kings.
