Unthank is the name used by the chamberlain of Valsinore Castle.[1] He was the secret primary antagonist of the gamebook Night of the Necromancer. He was a Necromancer and the High Priest of a Cult of Death worshipping the Shadow King, and was responsible for the hero's demise.[2]
History[]
Over one hundred years earlier, he slaughtered the entire population of his home village of Fetchfen in order to receive the power to unnaturally extend his life as a result of a pact with the dark gods.[3] He later had himself installed as the Chamberlain of Valsinore Castle, both to use the castle and its nearby spiritual sites as his base of operations, and for the sister of the castle's master, Lady Oriana, whom he intended to use as a sacrifice for the Shadow King.
As the time for the summoning neared, Unthank's secret preparations led to a massive increase of spiritual activity in Valsinore; ghosts, phantoms and undead began haunting the land en masse.[4] Unthank also invited the order of the Knights of the Black Shroud into Valsinor to help him taking over the castle and preparing the summoning.[5]
In order to remove the final great obstacle in his plans, Unthank arranged for a Death acolyte and several thugs to murder the castle's master as they returned home; but the increased necromantic presence in the land made this plan backfire when the master rose from their corpse as a ghost.[6]
Notes[]
- The name Unthank is a anglicized version of the German word "Undank", which in English means "ingratitude" or "ungratefulness".
